UMST Gulf Alumni Visit Rwanda Campus
A Legacy Renewed, A Future Pledged From April 1st to May 5th, 2025, the University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST) Rwanda Campus had the honor of hosting a distinguished group of alumni from the Gulf region, primarily from the United Arab Emirates. The visit, spanning five weeks, served as a celebration of the university’s growth and a renewed commitment to its future. The visiting alumni, now successful professionals in fields such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, human resources, and business, were welcomed back to their alma mater with campus tours, academic discussions, mentorship sessions, and vibrant networking events. Virtual interactions also brought together alumni and students from UMST’s campuses in Rwanda, Tanzania, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, reflecting the university’s expanding global network. As they toured the state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced laboratories, digital classrooms, and simulation centers, many alumni expressed pride in the institution’s progress since their time as students. Sami Salaheldin, a Batch 6 graduate and current Laboratory Supervisor at Mediclinic Middle East Hospitals in Abu Dhabi, remarked, “The equipment here is far more advanced than what we had during our time. It gives me confidence that future generations will be well-prepared—and I’m proud to support that.” The alumni delegation included some prominent professionals, such as Dr. Elamin Gafar, Chairman of ROMANA Holding Group, Mona Farah, Vice President for Pharmaceutical Standards & Governance at Daman Health Insurance, and Razan Muawia, Senior HR Executive at YAS Asset Management (Miral Company). Their presence at the event highlighted the far-reaching impact of UMST graduates, and their commitment to giving back to the university that helped shape their careers. In a special reception, the alumni were greeted by Professor Mamoun Homeida, UMST’s Founder and Chairman, who was thanked for the mentorship and guidance they received during their studies. “You’ve carried our name across continents,” Professor Homeida said, reflecting on their success. “Your return is more than a visit—it’s a reaffirmation of our mission.” Each alumnus held focused mentorship sessions with current students, where they shared personal insights about their industries, career development, and leadership skills. The sessions were designed to help students better understand the challenges and opportunities they will face as they enter the workforce. Mona Farah, a graduate and Vice President for Pharmaceutical Standards at Daman Health Insurance, shared her thoughts on UMST’s evolution: “UMST made us who we are. Now it’s preparing tomorrow’s leaders. As a parent and professional, I believe this is a university you can trust to deliver global-standard education.” Students were encouraged to ask questions during these intimate sessions, gaining valuable advice on navigating the job market, setting career goals, and balancing professional and personal growth. The exchange of knowledge and experience between alumni and students was seen as a critical step in preparing the next generation of leaders. As the visit concluded, the alumni group made several pledges aimed at strengthening the university’s global network. They agreed to strengthen the UMST Alumni Association, a formal network to support professional collaboration and community-building across continents. They also committed to creating a Virtual Alumni Office, designed to facilitate ongoing communication between UMST and its international alumni, and to help current students access mentorship and career guidance. In addition to these initiatives, the alumni pledged to support the development of internships, professional training, and job placements through their global networks, particularly in the Gulf region. They also promised to contribute to building a dynamic alumni database, a vital tool for tracking accomplishments and maintaining strong, long-term relationships. Dr. Elamin Gafar, who leads ROMANA Holding Group, expressed his intent to mobilize Sudanese professionals living abroad to act as ambassadors for UMST, supporting its initiatives through community engagement and professional guidance. Razan Muawia also expressed her desire to help business and administration students by offering internship opportunities and corporate mentorship. UMST Rwanda Campus Vice Chancellor, Professor Samir Shaheen, praised the alumni for their ongoing commitment to the university’s mission. “This visit is not just a homecoming—it’s a statement of intent,” Professor Shaheen said. “These alumni are leaders, and their commitment today ensures that UMST’s future will be even brighter.” The visit concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared vision for UMST’s continued growth. The message was clear: UMST’s alumni are not only graduates—they are lifelong partners in the university’s mission to educate, inspire, and empower future generations.
